The supply chain in China, including thousands of mainland factories, is reeling from a 13.6% increase of the minimum wage. As a result, the lowest salary in some areas in China is being pushed up to 1,500 yuan or $240 per month. Chinese export manufacturers in the Hong Kong area expect that the increase will result in the downsizing—or complete closing—of 1/3 of Hong Kong’s 50,000 factories in China.

When reading these figures, everyone probably has the same question in mind: Are China’s increasing costs killing sourcing business? Mr. Etienne Charlier, Managing Director of procur Asia will give his point of view on these issues.

Mr. Charlier already had more than 10-years management experience in China when he created procurAsia, a service and consulting company that assists Western companies to source high tech products and industrial equipment from China. He built his experience while working in several executive positions for Alcatel, a large international group providing telecommunication solutions.
